Are you gearing up for a fun-filled family photo session? Whether it’s your first time or you’re already seasoned pros, it’s always helpful to have a few tips up your sleeve to ensure everything goes smoothly. You’re here because you value photos with a natural and candid feeling. You want to see your family’s unique energy and personality captured authentically. So, let’s dive into some handy tips to help you get ready for your upcoming session!
Comfort is key when it comes to looking and feeling your best in front of the camera. Opt for outfits made from soft, breathable fabrics that allow you to move freely. Avoid stiff or itchy materials that could cause discomfort, especially for little ones. Plan to wear clothes that let you move easily and sit easily without any fabric bunching.
Start thinking about what your family will wear well in advance of your session to avoid any last-minute stress. Consider choosing a colour palette or family of colours that complement each other and create a cohesive look. Neutrals are always a safe bet and can help keep the focus on your family’s beautiful faces.
Relax and have fun during your session! I’ll provide plenty of prompts and games to keep everyone engaged and entertained. Those candid, in-between moments of laughter and play often make for the most memorable photos. Consider bringing along props or personal items that reflect your family’s interests or hobbies. These can add a unique touch to your photos and make them more meaningful. This might include your favourite picnic blanket or special toys.
Pets are part of the family too! If you’re bringing along your furry friends, give them some time for exercise and play before the session to help them feel relaxed and ready to shine. Also – be sure to let me know in advance so I can better prepare and ensure your location is pet-friendly. One of my favourite pet-friendly locations is Assiniboine Forest. Check out this fall session here.
Family sessions are all about capturing the beauty of your unique family dynamic, so be prepared to go with the flow and let the magic unfold naturally. It’s okay if kiddos get into the zone or have a shorter attention span. Sit back and relax and know that we’ll capture a beautiful collection of images of your entire family.
Planning photos during the time of day that works for your family’s schedule and for the best lighting options is key! Depending on the season – we generally recommend either late morning or late afternoon/early evening to make the most of soft natural light for outdoor sessions. Additionally, consider scheduling your session during a time of day when your family is typically at their best. Avoid scheduling too close to nap time or mealtimes to minimize and hanger.
If your session is outdoors, keep an eye on the weather forecast and dress accordingly. Don’t forget to bring along layers if needed. And in case of severe weather – I’ll reach out and we can chat backup plans or rescheduling if absolutely necessary. All sessions include complimentary rescheduling due to inclement weather.
Bring along water bottles and snacks to keep everyone hydrated and energized during the session, especially if it’s hot or if you have young children. A little piece of candy can go a long way!
Remember, our goal is to create a relaxed and enjoyable experience for your family, so don’t stress about being perfect. Simply focus on being yourselves and having a good time.
