I bet if you live in Winnipeg… you are pretty used to the idea of bundling up in winter, right? One of the best ways to do this is to dress in layers – starting with a great thermal base. As you brainstorm what you’ll wear to your session, don’t forget to include your favourite stylish accessories like scarves, toques and mitts.
Good boots and warm socks are non-negotiable! Keep those tootsies snug as we explore the outdoor location together. Bring an extra pair of shoes/boots to change into after your session incase your feet get wet. Pro tip: Add in some hand & toe warmers into your pockets or boots for extra warmth.
These are my favourite that I like to have on hand for the colder months in the year:

Another way to keep warm during your session is to bring along your favourite hot drink to keep you warm from the inside out. You can also consider making a pitstop at your favourite local café for an extra treat before or after your session to warm up too!
In our house, we have way too many Yetti cups taking over our cupboards, but they really do make the best thermos for both hot & cold beverages. Here’s one of our favourite versions:

Let’s plan your session for the early afternoon when temperatures are likely to be at their highest. The soft winter sunlight can create a magical ambiance for your photos. In winter, I’ll typically recommend we arrange our session anytime between 10am and 2pm. Engagement sessions are about an hour in length so we have enough time to bounce around to a few nearby spots and create beautiful variety in your photos.
Winter weather can be unpredictable and your comfort is always my priority! Remember that rescheduling due to extreme cold is always an option. We want your experience to be enjoyable, not frosty! Typically, I’ll suggest we reschedule anytime the temperatures start dipping around or below -25ish with a windchill.
And hey – if winter isn’t your thing, I hear ya! Come check out this summer beach session if you’re looking for some inspiration that’s a bit warmer! See it here: Patricia Beach Engagement Session.
During your session you can expect a variety of fun prompts that will keep you warm by moving around and staying active in your shoot. We’ll keep things going with the flow and every few minutes shift into a new little activity or suggestion for you to try out.
I’m here to make your winter engagement session fun and enjoyable, so you have photos that really feel like you! Trust in the process — I got you! Winter in Winnipeg can be a magical time for engagement photos. With a little bit of preparation, we’ll have a blast capturing your love and the joy of the season!
